Waggoner, 6-foot-5, 230-pound defensive end in the Class of 2018 out of Des Moines, is the top player in the state of Iowa. 247Sports grades him as the No. 20 weak-side defensive end in the country.
Waggoner is Iowa’s 15th commit in the Class of 2018, and he immediately becomes the Hawkeyes’ top-rated commit. The 4-star recruit attends Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines, where he was a three-year starter.
“His recruiting took off a year ago but at end of the day he’s a blue-collar player, somebody who is going to work hard and be productive and a good fit for the Iowa Hawkeyes,” his high school coach told 247Sports.
“It’s kind of surreal that the recruiting has blown up like this,” Waggoner told The Des Moines Register in March. “I worked hard my whole life for it, so I hoped it would, but I never really knew for sure.”
He also had offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, UCLA and Nebraska, to name a few.
“We felt he was a Division I kid, but you never know,” Dowling head coach Tom Wilson told The Des Moines Register. “We only had one other time in my career when Michigan came calling, and this is the first time for Ohio State.
Waggoner is Iowa’s first verbal commit since Ben VanSumeren, a 3-star recruit who committed to the Hawkeyes last month. This is the second straight cycle that Iowa’s landed a blue-chip defensive end. Last year, the Hawkeyes reeled in 5-star recruit A.J Epenesa.
