IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Baltimore Orioles selected Iowa senior shortstop Mason McCoy in the sixth round of the 2017 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
The 6-foot, 182-pound McCoy, who hails from Washington, Ill., joins first baseman Jake Adams as the highest-drafted non-pitcher among Hawkeyes since Danan Hughes was drafted in the third round 25 years ago. Adams was selected seven spots before McCoy.
As Iowa’s No. 2 batter in the lineup, McCoy led the Big Ten in hits (83) and tied with Adams for runs scored (55). McCoy hit .328 this season to rank 15th among league hitters. He was second in doubles (18) and fifth in total bases (120).
McCoy, 22, was a two-time All-American at Illinois Central Community College. He helped the Hawkeyes win the Big Ten Tournament this year and advance to the NCAA Tournament. McCoy had 3 hits and scored 3 runs in the Hawkeyes’ championship victory against Northwestern.
