IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s basketball coaches combined for $40,000 in bonuses and athletics director Gary Barta picked up $15,000 as a result of the teams’ Academic Progress Rate scores, which were released by the NCAA on Wednesday.
Men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery earned a $25,000 bonus due to his program’s multi-year rate of 960. McCaffery’s contract calls for him to earn a $25,000 bonus if his team exceeds 930. Women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder earned $15,000 for exceeding 930. Her squad attained a 988.
Barta’s contract includes a $15,000 bonus if all of Iowa’s teams reach the 930 minimum. Wrestling coach Tom Brands picked up a $10,000 bonus. Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz’s academic bonuses are tied to graduation rates, not APR.
The NCAA uses APR to track academic progress, athlete retention and graduation. Failure to meet the minimum score of 930 could result in postseason bans, scholarship reductions and other penalties.
All of Iowa’s 24 sports attained at least a 960 score, well beyond the 930 threshold. Men’s golf, men’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving all earned perfect scores of 1,000.
