IOWA CITY, Iowa — The second portion of Iowa wrestling’s dual campaign gets underway Fridayat 8 p.m. ET when the No. 7 Hawkeyes battle Michigan State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa (7-0) last battled in a dual meet on Dec. 10 at Maryland, and it’s been five weeks since the Hawkeyes took the mat at home. The lineup will have a much different look, too.
Three freshmen likely will debut at home for the Hawkeyes against Michigan State (4-2), including Spencer Lee at 125 pounds. Lee was the nation’s top recruit in 2017 but redshirted as he wrestled unattached. After a superb tournament at the Midlands last week, Lee’s redshirt was yanked.
“This is a big deal because he’s a unique talent,” Iowa coach Tom Brands said. “On one level, it’s like you want it to be normal because he’s that’s good. It doesn’t matter if he’s a true freshman or not. He can represent.”
Joining Lee on the mat for the first time at Carver-Hawkeye Arena are Carter Happel (141 pounds) and Alex Marinelli (165).
Another wrestler to watch is 157-pounder Michael Kemerer, who is ranked No. 2 nationally and 13-0. Kemerer was named the Big Ten’s wrestler of the week after going 6-0 at Midlands. He won four matches by fall and another by technical fall, and he claimed the championship with a 5-2 victory against No. 7-ranked Josh Shields from Arizona State.

Iowa wrestling vs. Michigan State key matchup
125: Spencer Lee (Iowa) vs. Rayvon Foley (Michigan State)
This is the match for which everyone is waiting. Spencer Lee was the nation’s top-ranked recruit in 2017 but got off to a late start because of an ACL tear in his right knee last season. He finally was able to practice in October and wrestled unattached until his redshirt was removed this week. This is his first match. Lee will wrestle a pretty good opponent in Rayvon Foley, who is 18-3 this season for the Spartans.
