Iowa wrestler Sam Stoll was injured and hospitalized after being accidentally shot in the leg Tuesday around 4:30 a.m., according to multiple reports. Stoll was hit in the knee and his injuries are non-life threatening, per Iowa City radio station KCJJ.
From the KCJJ report:
Police say they received a report of a gunshot victim arriving at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics a little after 4:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation led them to a Valley Avenue residence – across Newton Road to the north of Carver-Hawkeye Arena – where they learned someone had discharged a firearm, accidentally hitting another person in the knee.
Stoll was an All-American at heavyweight for the Hawkeyes last season. The 22-year-old has competed in each of his three seasons so far at Iowa and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2018.
Iowa released a statement shortly after the incident was reported.
“We are aware of the situation involving Sam Stoll and are currently gathering additional information at this time,” the Iowa athletic department wrote.
