IOWA CITY, Iowa — Outside of the land of two rivers, college football observers view Iowa-Iowa State the way Iowans might view Colorado-Colorado State. Sure, they recognize the intensity but the game moves the needle about as much as last week’s earthquake does today.
Yet inside the border, the CyHawk Showdown generates more buzz than any other annual game. It sells out in both locations, and nothing (save for maybe the Iowa Caucus) is discussed as much. This is the 40th game between the teams since the series was jump-started in 1977 after a 43-year absence. It’s also the fifth game for the fourth different trophy. May the beer and hate flow like a springtime flood.
