Iowa-South Dakota State preview
No one could predict how poorly Iowa’s offense would perform in the first half against Louisiana, least of all coach Fran McCaffery.
The Hawkeyes scored just 17 points on 7-of-27 shooting. Iowa fell behind by 20 points and failed to catch up despite scoring 54 points in the second half.
“When your offense is sputtering, your defense has to be at its best, and it was not,” McCaffery told Des Moines Register reporter Mark Emmert.
Louisiana crushed Iowa in the paint, outscoring the Hawkeyes 48-26. Many of those points came on the fast break in which Iowa was outscored 16-7.
Starting freshman center Luka Garza scored no points in 12 minutes.
“On a different day, I could do much better against that team,” Garza told Emmert. “I’ve just got to be more aggressive, play harder.”
Iowa sophomore guard Isaiah Moss stepped up in the second half, scoring 22 of his career-high 24 points. Moss also sank all 10 free-throw attempts. Guard Jordan Bohannon was the only other Iowa player scoring in double figures with 21 points.
The Hawkeyes play South Dakota State for the first time since 2010. The Jackrabbits rolled Iowa 79-69 that day, but the Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 7-2.
South Dakota State’s Reed Tellinghuisen scored 16 points against Wyoming on Monday.
