Iowa OT Brett Waechter announced on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon that he is stepping away from football.
Waechter, who is a redshirt freshman and was a 3-star recruit out of Hartley, Iowa, wrote in a note on Twitter that he’s leaving football because of how often he would throw up during practice and workouts, an issue he says worsened as his career continued from high school to Iowa.

“The doctors have tried all the tests they can, all the drugs that would allow me to still participate, and we made no progress,” Waechter wrote. “Over time, my desire to push through it burned out.”
He also wrote how he could barely hold down water during practices.
Waechter was originally recruited as a defensive end but switched to the offensive line before the 2015 season.
