Iowa-Northern Illinois preview

Iowa hopes to extend its winning streak to five games with a non-conference matchup against Northern Illinois.

The Hawkeyes (8-6) have played much better the last three weeks since a road defeat at Iowa State. Iowa appears to share the ball more effectively and play with more offensive efficiency.

One player who has come through for Iowa recently is sophomore Maishe Dailey, who scored a career-high 16 points in a win against Colorado. Dailey, a 6-foot-6 guard, also logged a career-best 27 minutes against the Buffaloes. Dailey has good quickness and speed as well as a solid left-handed perimeter shot.

It appears the Hawkeyes will need Dailey to play minutes at point guard for the rest of the season. Freshman backup point guard Connor McCaffery, who played in four games recently, had a tonsillectomy on Wednesday and is likely to miss the rest of the season. Connor McCaffery, the son of coach Fran McCaffery, suffered from mono and missed the first 10 games of the season and his procedure is a result of that illness.

Connor McCaffery averaged 13.3 minutes per game while spelling starting point guard Jordan Bohannon. McCaffery is likely to redshirt.

Against Northern Illinois, the Hawkeyes face a difficult matchup in guard Eugene German, who leads the Mid-American Conference in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game. German, a 6-foot sophomore from Gary, Ind., notched a career-high with 28 points at Iowa State earlier this month. German averages 22.3 points per game over the Huskies’ last six games.

Perhaps the night’s best points matchup is Northern Illinois’ Levi Bradley against Iowa’s Tyler Cook. Bradley averages 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds a game. For Iowa, Cook ranks first in scoring (13.7) and its tied for the team lead in rebounding (6.6).

Iowa resumes Big Ten play at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT Jan. 2 against Michigan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
