IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s No. 4-ranked wrestling squad looks to get back to its winning ways with a dual against No.7 Michigan at 5 p.m. CT Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes (9-1, 4-1) lost their first dual of the season last Sunday at Ohio State. Iowa won 4 matches, including Spencer Lee upsetting top-ranked Nathan Tomasello 3-2 at 125 pounds. As underdogs in multiple matches, Iowa’s wrestlers battled and prevented extra bonus points.
But there are no moral victories at Iowa, especially when coach Tom Brands sees ways for his wrestlers to score more. Brands wants his wrestlers to be more aggressive early in the match rather than wait until they’re trailing to make a move.
“The most important thing is that our guys keep getting better and look at guys like [Paul] Glynn and [Carter] Happel, [Mitch] Bowman and Kaleb Young and Cash Wilcke,” Brands said. “Go get the first takedown. I don’t know if we’re using the full 7 minutes. This is a common theme so it’s not something new that we’ve learned. It’s more like, this is a kind of, now we can emphasize it even more because it happened again.
“We talk about wrestling hard for 7 minutes but these guys are getting the first takedown on us because we’re coming out and we’re straight-legged and we’re trying to break in the match. The next thing you know, you’ve got a takedown and back points against you. Or several takedowns in the first period. What are you waiting for to get into the match? If you’re waiting to get into that match, then you’re not using the full 7 minutes.”
In the upcoming dual on Saturday, 16 wrestlers are ranked, with half of them rated in the top 5. Iowa has won the last nine duals between the teams.
The Wolverines (7-2, 4-1) have lost to only Penn State and Lehigh in duals this year.
