IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa’s 17-10 overtime loss to Northwestern cost the Hawkeyes a spot in the latest Land of 10 Power Poll.
The Hawkeyes (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) dropped from sixth to seventh in the poll, of which is voted upon by Land of 10’s 13 writers. Iowa has rated as high as fifth and as low as eighth this season.
After a week off, the Hawkeyes struggled offensively in the second half at Northwestern. Iowa took a 7-0 halftime lead on a 7-yard pass from Nate Stanley to Noah Fant. Northwestern rebounded for 10 consecutive points in the second half before Iowa knotted the score at 10 on a 48-yard field goal from Miguel Recinos. Wildcats quarterback Clayton Thorson scored the game-winner on a 1-yard sneak in overtime. Iowa failed to score on its overtime possession.
Iowa has lost its three Big Ten games by a combined 16 points. The Hawkeyes dropped a 21-19 game to Penn State in the league opener, then lost 17-10 at Michigan State.
“You have to find a way to win close games,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “For us, that’s been historic for the most part. It just gets down to details, a little better preparation, a little better practice — I think we had two good weeks. Part of that is growing pains and part of it we’ve got to improve faster and get a little bit better here if we’re going to flip this thing.”
Overall, six of Iowa’s seven opponents have a winning record and are a combined 32-17 this season. Big Ten West Division leader Wisconsin has played two teams with winning records, and the Badgers’ opponents are a combined 22-29.
Five weeks remain in Iowa’s season, and the Hawkeyes play host to ancient rival Minnesota this week at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa then plays host to Ohio State for the second time since 2006 before traveling to Wisconsin on Nov. 11. Iowa’s home finale is slated for Nov. 18 against Purdue, and the Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season Nov. 24 at Nebraska.
I voted Iowa sixth, behind Northwestern but ahead of Michigan. Using comparative scores with the Wolverines, Iowa lost by 2 points to Penn State (Michigan lost 42-13) and 17-10 at Michigan State. The Spartans beat the Wolverines 14-10 in Ann Arbor.
Penn State remained the unanimous No. 1 in the poll, followed by Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State. The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes will play on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
