IOWA CITY, Iowa — A day after Iowa rallied to beat in-state rival Iowa State in overtime, the Hawkeyes moved up to No. 5 on Sunday in the Week 2 Land of 10 Power Poll.
The Hawkeyes (2-0) inched ahead of Maryland (2-0) for fifth among Big Ten teams, but by just 2 points. Last week Iowa and Maryland were flipped. Penn State moved up to No. 1 with 12 of the 13 first-place votes. Michigan was second with the other first-place vote, while Ohio State dropped to third following their loss to Oklahoma. Wisconsin was fourth.
In the national polls released on Sunday, Iowa received 4 points in the Amway/Coaches poll and 2 points in The Associated Press Top 25.
Saturday, Iowa trailed Iowa State 31-21 midway through the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game on a touchdown pass from Nate Stanley to Ihmir Smith-Marsette followed by a field goal. Iowa State then retook the lead on a 74-yard strike from Jacob Park to Hakeem Butler. Iowa marched down the field and scored again on a 46-yard catch-and-run by Akrum Wadley. The Hawkeyes ended the game in overtime on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Stanley to Smith-Marsette.
Stanley finished the game with 333 yards and 5 touchdown through the air. Wadley rushed for 118 yards and caught 4 passes for 72 more. He found the end zone twice.
I voted Iowa fifth for the second straight week. Unlike the season opener in which the Hawkeyes’ defense dominated Wyoming, Iowa won the Cy-Hawk Trophy with its offense. Stanley was the first Iowa quarterback since 2014 to pass for at least 300 yards. He completed passes to nine different receivers and led four touchdown drives of at least 89 yards. Iowa’s defense was gashed, especially through the air. Park passed for 347 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Hawkeyes finish their nonconference slate Saturday at Kinnick Stadium against North Texas (1-1). Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT (3:30 p.m. ET) on ESPN2.
