Drake basketball has an opening for its head coaching position and Matthew Bain from the Des Moines Register wrote an article about potential candidates from around the country.
Drake, which competes in the Missouri Valley Conference, is located in Des Moines, Iowa. With the obvious connection to the state of Iowa as a whole, some former — and current — Iowa Hawkeyes names were on Bain’s list.
People with ties to the Hawkeyes include Kirk Speraw, Jeff Horner, Brian Jones and Greg Lansing.
Speraw is a current assistant with the Hawkeyes. He has been with the team since 2010. Speraw was also an assistant for the team during his first coaching stint from 1979-80.
Iowa fans may remember the Horner name as well. Horner played for the Hawkeyes from 2002-06 and still holds the program record for most 3-pointers made at 232.
Jones and Lansing were assistant coaches with the Hawkeyes from 1999-2006.
Iowa finished the 2017-18 season with a 14-19 overall record. The Hawkeyes went 4-14 in Big Ten play.
Drake went 17-17 this season and ended its campaign with a second-round loss in the CIT to Northern Colorado.
