IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT and will play South Dakota at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
The Hawkeyes (18-14) were one of three Big Ten teams to qualify for the tournament. Others included Indiana and Illinois. The other top NIT seeds are Syracuse, California and Illinois State.
South Dakota (22-11) is guided by point guard Trey Dickerson, who played for Iowa in 2014-15. Dickerson transferred to USD after that season. He averages 10.4 points and leads the Coyotes with 93 assists.

This is Iowa’s third NIT appearance in the last six years under coach Fran McCaffery. In 2012, Iowa beat Dayton in the opener, then lost at Oregon. In 2013, Iowa beat Indiana State and Stony Brook at home, then beat Virginia in a quarterfinal. At Madison Square Garden, Iowa stopped Maryland before losing to Baylor in the finals.
Overall, it will mark the Hawkeyes’ eighth appearance in the NIT. Iowa is 9-7 in NIT action.
