The game with Northern Iowa fills out Iowa’s 2020 nonconfernce schedule. The Hawkeyes will also face Iowa State on Sept. 12 and Northern Illinois on Sept. 26. The Hawkeyes also host Northern Illinois next season, so the team’s 2018 and 2020 nonconference schedules will feature the same three teams.
Northern Iowa is also on the Hawkeyes’ 2018 nonconference schedule. Iowa is 16-1 against the Panthers all time and the two sides last met in the 2014 season.
Earlier this year, the Big Ten changed a rule about scheduling FCS opponents. Teams are now allowed to schedule them in years in which they have only four conference home games, like Iowa does in 2018 and 2020.
