LB Josey Jewell racking up midseason honors; Nate Stanley not happy with his play at QB

Iowa football is always the main topic in Iowa Breakfast Club, Land of 10’s daily Hawkeyes notebook — but we cover news, notes and analysis across Hawkeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Iowa football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Midseason honor roll

There is a long way to go in the season, but linebacker Josey Jewell is positioning himself for some significant postseason honors., Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press each named him a first-team midseason All-America selection on Tuesday. Jewell has recorded 70 tackles, 9 1/2 tackles for loss, 2 1/2 sacks, 4 pass breakups and 1 interception this season.

A self assessment

Quarterback Nate Stanley is happy with his interception total. The rest of his game? He told Mark Emmert of the Des Moines Register everything else, especially his footwork, needs some work.

What almost was

The Hawkeyes recruited Clayton Thorson hard. He nearly became their quarterback. Instead, he picked Northwestern and is now the enemy. Land of 10 takes a look at Thorson and his Iowa past before the Hawkeyes visit the Wildcats on Saturday.

Let the kids run loose

Iowa is relying more on running back Akrum Wadley while James Butler is out with an elbow injury. The Hawkeyes need to reverse that trend and give more carries to backups Toren Young and Kelly Ivory-Martin. Land of 10 explains why it’s the best move for Wadley and the offense.

Injury update

Speaking of Butler, he is back practicing with the Hawkeyes. Don’t expect him to face the Wildcats this week, though.

Women’s basketball update

Matthew Bain of the Iowa City Press-Citizen spent an hour at Iowa women’s basketball practice on Tuesday and shared several observations. None may be as important as what he saw from point guard Tania Davis eight months after ACL surgery. She appeared ahead of schedule and may be ready for the Nov. 10 season opener.
