Garbutt, a redshirt sophomore, saw action primarily on special teams last season. He played in three games and made 3 tackles. He was listed as the third-string linebacker on the spring practice depth chart. Garbutt thanked the Hawkeyes for the opportunity to play for the program.
“The University of Iowa has been a place for me to learn, make lasting relationships, and sharpen my skills under the leadership of (Iowa head coach Kirk) Ferentz and his capable team of coaches,” wrote Garbutt on social media. “After pray, consulting with my family and Coach Ferentz, I have made the decision to leave the University of Iowa. I am thankful for my years as a Hawkeye and will continue to support the franchise. I have decided to pursue other options to finish my football career and education. I will undergo the recruiting process and will announce my decision. Many thanks to the University of Iowa staff, coaches, and students that I consider family.”
