IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson tackled Michigan running back De’Veon Smith in the end zone for a safety Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium.
On second and 10 from the 2-yard line, Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight handed off to Smith, who lined up deep in an I-formation. Johnson, Iowa’s left defensive tackle, beat the outside shoulder of right guard Kyle Kalis and hit Smith in the end zone. Johnson wrapped up Smith before he could escape.
The safety brought Iowa to within 10-2 with 6 minutes, 31 seconds left in the second quarter. It was set up by a 54-yard punt from Iowa’s Ron Coluzzi, who pinned the Wolverines at the 2.
