GREEN BAY, Wis. — Incoming Iowa running back Henry Geil has a competitive side that only a handful of people have witnessed.
That passion comes out on the football field as both a player and a fan. His family has season tickets to the Green Bay Packers, of which Geil is a fan. He recalls with a smile when he hollered at New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr., during an NFL wild-card game in 2017.
There was another incident that gives him more pause, however.
As a seventh-grader, Geil shouted and gestured toward a few of the Minnesota Vikings. One of the players was Chad Greenway, an Iowa alum. It’s a moment Geil relives almost every day, especially after picking Iowa.
“I was like, ‘Hey, Greenway,’ and gave him the business when he was in the tunnel,” Geil said. “He was standing with Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen and all of them. So [Greenway] looks me dead in the eyes when he was walking out. I was never so scared in my whole life. There was a barrier in front of us, but I was still scared.”
Geil thinks of Greenway’s stare, and it still terrifies him. He’s held that memory throughout his recruitment, his commitment, his signing and even now as he approaches summer training at Iowa.
Geil knows one day he will run into Greenway. He’s unsure of what he’ll say.
“That was my biggest fear going to Iowa,” Geil said. “What if I see him? What if he somehow remembers this? I was nervous. I’ve been thinking about it since I committed. I haven’t seen him, but I’m sure he’s going to pop up in the next four years.
“I’m going to have to use the bathroom that day. I’ll have to drink five gallons of Gatorade before I see him coming.”
As for Geil’s best moment attending a game at Lambeau Field, it was the game where he gave the business to Beckham Jr.
“I was at the Giants playoff game a couple of years ago, and I sit in whatever end zone is not the end zone [Packers wide receiver] Randall Cobb caught that [Hail Mary pass at end of the second quarter],” Geil said. “I remember watching the ball go up in the air, I lost it in the snow and I turned around and I’m going to get some nachos, and I saw it on the big screen and Randall Cobb tiptoes down. I thought, ‘There was no way’. I made my quick beeline to the visitor’s tunnel so I could go yell at Odell.”
