ANSWER: It’s quite possible Iowa’s offense will be better next year with shooting guard Joe Wieskamp jumping into the starting lineup. Wieskamp is the highest-rated basketball recruit is at least a generation for the Hawkeyes and he fills a backcourt need.

Wieskamp is a 6-foot-6 Rivals’ 4-star guard who is ranked No. 42 in the 2018 class. He committed to Iowa as a freshman and he’s one of the most decorated basketball players in state history. Wieskamp competes at Muscatine High School in the Mississippi Athletic Conference, one of Iowa’s top high school leagues. He has earned first-team all-conference honors in each of his three previous seasons and twice was named first-team all-state. He was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior and ranks fourth in scoring all-time in state annals.

This year, Wieskamp leads the state in scoring at 34.4 points per game. He averaged 30.4 last year as a junior, 21.6 as a sophomore and 18.6 his freshman season.

So how does he help the Hawkeyes next season? For starters, Wieskamp is such a prolific scorer that opponents have to account for him. While he isn’t quite the perimeter shooter that Peter Jok was, Wieskamp will command a similar on-court presence. That will help the offense with spacing. Iowa’s motion offense is a mess half the time because defenses throw everything at point guard Jordan Bohannon, who is playing at a high level. Often the rest of the backcourt fails to help out Bohannon and the possession turns into a panic or hero-ball. At a minimum, Wieskamp should help Iowa get better shots in its half-court offense.
