Former Iowa player/assistant, Iowa State coach Dan McCarney will be Hawkeyes’ honorary captain on Saturday
This will be a familiar name to Iowa football fans.
Dan McCarney, who played for the Hawkeyes and later was the head coach for Iowa State, will be Iowa’s honorary captain for Saturday’s home game against Miami (Ohio).
McCarney, who’s also from Iowa City, lettered for the Hawkeyes from 1972 to 1974 and was a team captain his senior year. McCarney also served as an assistant for longtime coach Hayden Fry for more then a decade.
McCarney eventually found himself at Iowa State, where he was the Cyclones’ head coach for 12 seasons from 1995 to 2006. He went 56-85, going 9-3 in 2000. He was most recently North Texas’ head coach.
On Saturday, McCarney will join the Iowa captain for the pregame coin toss and will be with the team in the locker room before and after the game
