A group of former Iowa basketball managers have set up a memorial fund for Joel Cornette.
Cornette, a former Iowa assistant coach and player at Butler, died earlier this week at 35. He was a key member of Butler’s team from 1999-2003 and coached with the Hawkeyes from 2007-2010.
The GoFundMe page set up by a group of Iowa managers who worked with Cornette can be found here.
They wrote: “When our group first met Joel, it was clear how much of a positive influence Butler University had on him. During his time at Iowa, he would beam with pride about being a Bulldog. He loved the roll of the underdog that surrounded Butler, and cherished the consistent success they experienced beyond his graduation. With that in mind, we wanted to set up a memorial fund for Joel at Butler.”
Each former member pledged $33 for the number Cornette wore at Butler. As of Friday afternoon, they had raised just short of $600.
A celebration of life ceremony for Cornette is scheduled for Monday morning at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
