Derrick Mitchell Jr. earned his degree from the University of Iowa on Saturday. He also announced where he’ll play his final year of college football.
The running back will head to Texas Tech as a graduate transfer and play the 2017 season for the Red Raiders. Mitchell, who appeared in 14 games in a Hawkeyes uniform, made the announcement on Instagram.
Mitchell began his Iowa career as a wide receiver before making the transition to the backfield. In two seasons at tailback, the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder ran for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns on 27 carries.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz first said Mitchell would seek a grad transfer in January.
“Derrick will earn his degree from Iowa this spring and has elected to transfer for his senior season,” Ferentz said. “Derrick was a great teammate and valuable team member during his career. We congratulate him on earning his degree this semester and wish him good luck next fall.”
