Iowa football linebacker Aaron Mends will miss “an extended period of time” with an injury, the team announced Friday.
“The injury occurred during Iowa’s final week of spring drills,” the team said. The news came just before Iowa’s spring open practice on Friday night, which the team held this season in lieu of a spring game.
Mends has never started a game in his career at Iowa, but he earned the starting weakside linebacker job this spring.
“The coaches, they tell you stories all the time of when you first get here, so you know going in,” Mends said last week. “You put those at the back of your head, but it’s really about whenever those times come. … They told me it was going to be difficult, just keep fighting and fighting. Because why work so hard and never see the fruits of your labor? Eventually, you’ll get an opportunity and you’ll have no regrets at the end of the day.”
Iowa did not provide specifics on the location of the injury or an estimated timetable for his return.
