IOWA CITY, Iowa — Riley McCarron’s blazing 40-yard dash time at his pro day earned the Iowa wide receiver an NFL opportunity.
McCarron, a 5-foot-9, 188-pound former walk-on, agreed to terms with the Houston Texans after the NFL draft ended Saturday night. His 40 (4.36 seconds) and vertical jump (40.5 inches) at Iowa’s pro day would have both ranked third at the NFL combine.
A Dubuque, Iowa native, McCarron worked his way into Iowa’s wide receiver rotation as a junior in 2015 and became a starter in 2016. In his career, he hauled in 50 passes for 584 yards and 5 touchdowns. Last year McCarron grabbed 42 passes for 517 yards and 4 touchdowns.
McCarron produced one of the season’s big plays when he returned a punt for a touchdown at Illinois. He started 13 games and was a four-time academic All-Big Ten member.
