Indiana meets Georgia Southern in a nonconference game that figures to test the Hoosiers’ run defense over anything else. The game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23.
The Hoosiers are 1-1 and are playing after a de facto bye week due to their game against Florida International being cancelled as a result of Hurricane Irma. Georgia Southern figures to be a tune-up game as Indiana prepares for its matchup with Big Ten power Penn State next week.
Indiana-Georgia Southern: Live updates, score
Indiana 52, Georgia Southern 17 (FINAL): Indiana moves to 2-1 with a 52-17 win after dominating all phases of the game early. Freshman running back Morgan Ellison starred with 186 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, but took some hard hits along the way. The Hoosiers are now onto Penn State and are looking solid enough that they should at least be able to give the Nittany Lions a game.
Indiana 52, Georgia Southern 17 (Q4, 2:19): Indiana’s third takeaway is a touchdown as Andre Brown runs a fumble into the end zone. Just about wrapped up here.
Indiana 45, Georgia Southern 17 (Q4, 15:00) Georgia Southern kicked a field goal to take a small chunk out of Indiana’s lead. Despite the disparity in score, Indiana has only outgained Georgia State 428-328, though it helps they’re winning the turnover battle 2-0. We head to fourth quarter well past the three-hour mark in this game, even though we’ve only seen 32 passes to 78 rushes.
Indiana 45, Georgia Southern 14 (Q3, 9:38): Another passing touchdown for Georgia Southern as the Hoosiers’ safeties were playing shallow. The Eagles have posted 109 passing yards today, their highest mark of the season.
Indiana 45, Georgia Southern 7 (Q3, 10:42): Peyton Ramsey hits Devonte Williams for a 42-yard receiving touchdown. It’s the first career touchdown for Williams as Indiana rolls on.
Indiana 38, Georgia Southern 7 (Q3, 14:21): Hoosiers open the half with a bang with a 71-yard pass from Richard Lagow to Ian Thomas, punctuated by a vicious stiff arm from Thomas. It comes with a sour note though, as Lagow is being attended to by trainers after taking a low hit.
Indiana 31, Georgia Southern 7 (Halftime): Georgia Southern runs out the clock to mercifully end the first half. Of note: Morgan Ellison took a hard shot during Indiana’s last drive and got up a little woozy. That’s likely the last we’ll be seeing of the freshman. Even if he’s okay, he’s more than earned some rest with 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts.
Indiana 31, Georgia Southern 7 (Q2, 2:51): Georgia Southern has life. After opening the game with a 29-to-5 run-pass ratio, quarterback Shai Werts fakes a run option then fires to receiver Ellis Richardson for the Eagles’ first passing touchdown of the season. Before this drive, Georgia Southern hadn’t crossed Indiana’s 48-yard line.
Indiana 31, Georgia Southern 0 (Q2, 11:50): Morgan Ellison scores his second touchdown of the game and the Hoosiers are now in cruise control. An earlier touchdown was called back when Ellison’s knee was found to be touching the ground when the ball was at the 1-yard line. Georgia Southern has notched one first down and two fumbles.
Touchdown Indiana. Ellison in from 9 yards out.
IU had six freshmen or redshirt freshmen on the field at that snap. #iufb

Indiana 24, Georgia Southern 0 (Q2, 14:14): Georgia Southern gets its first first down, but turns it over on downs four plays later. Another drive from the Hoosiers, including a 42-yard run from Cole Gest, ends in a field goal. Indiana was favored for this game, but this has just been a shellacking.
Indiana 21, Georgia Southern 0 (Q1, 4:56): Simmie Cobbs scores the easiest touchdown of his life as he recovers a Morgan Ellison fumble in the end zone. Georgia Southern fumbled after a 16-yard gain, it’s biggest of the game, setting up another short field for the Hoosiers.
Indiana 14, Georgia Southern 0 (Q1, 6:27): The Hoosiers force another three-and-out, then J-Shun Harris takes it to the house on a 70-yard punt return. After missing two straight seasons due to ACL tears, that has to feel good for the redshirt junior. Indiana is in firm control so far, outgaining the Eagles 66-6 to go with a punt return TD.

Indiana 7, Georgia Southern 0 (Q1, 8:54): A second effort from freshman running back Morgan Ellison gets the Hoosiers the first score of the day and his first career touchdown. The true freshman has received all six rushes for the Hoosiers and is looking more and more like the featured back in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are holding firm on defense, as Georgia Southern has all of one total yard through two drives so far.

Indiana-Georgia Southern preview
If something stands about Georgia Southern so far this year, it’s a near-complete commitment to the run on offense. During a blowout at the hands of Auburn in Week 1, the Eagles came away with just eight passing yards against 70 rushing yards despite trailing for nearly the entirety of the game. Currently, they rank only ahead of Army among FBS teams in passing yards per game at 50.5.
As for what identity the Hoosiers have on offense, that will come down to who’s under center. Protypical pocket passer saw the majority of snaps in Week 1 against Ohio State, while Peyton Ramsey, more of a dual threat, as the guy against Virginia in Week 2.
Given that Georgia Southern is closer in talent level to Virginia than Ohio State and allowing nearly 250 rushing yards per game, expect to see Ramsey leading a more run-focused attack from the Hoosiers.
Even if Indiana goes run-heavy though, Simmie Cobbs can still be expected to get his work in. The breakout star on the Hoosiers hauled in five receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown against Virginia.
