Indiana got 16 points from Tyra Buss and Jaelynn Penn posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. The Hoosiers outscored Virginia Tech, 22-13, in the final quarter and earned the win despite hitting just 2 of their 15 3-point attempts.
Indiana finished the 2017-18 season with a 23-14 record. The team missed out on the NCAA Tournament after going 16-13 (9-7) in the regular season. But the Hoosiers won six games — beating Tennessee-Martin, Milwaukee, Purdue, UC Davis, TCU and the Hokies — to claim the title.
Indiana made it to the quarterfinals of the WNIT in the 2016-17 season and last made the Women’s NCAA Tournament in 2016.
The Big Ten also produced the Men’s NIT champion. Penn State beat Utah for the 2018 NIT title on Thursday night in Madison Square Garden.
