Former Illinois coach Tim Beckman is working with North Carolina in a limited role, the Tar Heels clarified on Wednesday afternoon.
Beckman is just a volunteer assistant, CBS’s Jon Solomon reported, and he cannot instruct players.
UNC spokesman: Tim Beckman is a volunteer assistant on defense, not a coach, and is limited to film/scouting. He can't provide instruction.

It was learned Beckman was helping the Tar Heels on Wednesday morning. Beckman took over in Champaign in 2012, but his tenure ended just before the 2015 season when he was accused of mistreating players.
Beckman is close with UNC coach Larry Fedora, and the Tar Heels will face Illinois – with new head coach Lovie Smith – in the second week of the 2016 season.
