The Illinois football team landed a legacy walk-on on Wednesday night in center Preston Engel.
Engel is the son of former Fighting Illini offensive lineman Greg Engel, who played with the team from 1990-94 and also played five years in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and San Diego Chargers.

“I will play center, and coming in as a priority walk-on I will have to develop in the weight room,” Preston Engel told Illini Inquirer. “After watching practice, I saw how the line operates in different groups and everyone is getting reps, so I know I will definitely have my chance.”
Engel said he also had an offer from a smaller school and walk-on offers elsewhere as well.
“Staying close to home is a good thing, and I’ve always been a big Illinois fan my whole life,” Engel said. “Obviously, [my dad] has gone through the program and he knows what it takes. He wants me to be happy wherever I go, and him and I think that the University of Illinois has a good opportunity for me in both a football and academic aspect.”
Engel is 6-foot-1, 260 pounds.
