Illinois basketball forward Michael Finke is leaving the program. Finke announced Monday that he will transfer to another program to use his final year of college eligibility.
Finke was in the Illini’s rotation for each of the last three seasons, and the 6-foot-10 Champaign, Ill., native averaged 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game during the 2017-18 season. He will be eligible immediately in the 2018-19 season as a graduate transfer.

“Competing for the Fighting Illini and earning a degree from Ilinois was always a dream of mine growing up in Champaign. Being able to accomplish both of those goals has been a great honor,” Finke wrote on Twitter. “I want to thank Coach [John] Groce and his staff for recruiting me and coaching me my first three years. I would also like to thank Coach [Brad] Underwood and his staff for coaching me this past year. I have grown and learned a lot over the past four years. … I will forever be an Illini at heart. Thank you Illini nation for everything.”
Finke averaged at least 19 minutes per game in all three of his on-court seasons at Illinois. He was rated as a 3-star recruit in the 2014 recruiting class.
