Mark Smith is transferring from the Illinois basketball program after spending one season with the Illini and coach Brad Underwood, he announced on Monday.
“I just don’t fit the system,” Smith told the The Telegraph’s Greg Shashack. “I wish all the players the best of luck, but I just don’t fit the system. Coach Underwood, he’s going to get people that fit his system.”
Smith was one of five members of the Class of 2017 ― Underwood’s first recruiting class at Illinois. He and Trent Frazier were 4-star prospects who were expected to reform the Illini’s back court, and that came half true. Frazier was Illinois’ second-best offensive weapon as a freshman with 13 points per game. Smith, on the other hand averaged 5.8 points per game while shooting 34 percent from the field.
