Illinois coach Lovie Smith announced Wednesday that three Illini players reportedly arrested earlier in the day have been suspended from team activities.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that Illinois OL Darta Lee, WR Zarrian Holcombe, and DT Howard Watkins were arrested Wednesday morning and charged with home invasion and armed robbery. The incident allegedly took place in a University of Illinois dormitory, Bromley Hall, which online jail records listed as the address for Holcombe and Lee, according to ESPN.
In a statement, Smith said that the allegations, if proven true, “fail to live up to the standards we expect of our student athletes.” Smith added that the program will take “appropriate steps” as more information is learned.
Holcombe and Lee have already been serving suspensions from team activities for violations of team rules, Smith said in the statement. While those two will remain suspended, Watkins has been suspended indefinitely from team activities, according to Smith.
Holcombe played in seven games as a freshman in 2016 while Lee, also a freshman last season, played in six games and started two. Watkins is a 3-star recruit from Cincinnati Colerain High and early enrollee in the Illini’s 2017 class.
