Joseph Thompson, a 3-star cornerback in the 2019 recruiting class, flipped his commitment from Iowa State to Illinois on Wednesday night. Thompson, a Chicago native, is staying in his home state and joining an already strong Illinois recruiting class.
Thompson made his announcement on Twitter, saying “I’m staying home.”

“I am 110% committed to The University of Illinois,” Thompson wrote.
Thompson is ranked as the No. 101 cornerback and the No. 23 player in Illinois in the 247Sports composite ratings. He picked up an Illinois offer in February and visited Champaign, Ill. in March. Thompson initially committed to Iowa State on March 29, but he flipped that commitment to join Lovie Smith’s program.
Thompson is the fourth commitment in Illinois’ 2019 class. The Illini also have verbal commitments from 5-star athlete Isaiah Williams and 4-star athlete Marquez Beason — both ranked as top-60 recruits in the class. The Illini’s class was ranked 32nd in the nation and seventh in the Big Ten after Thompson’s commitment.
