Illinois doesn’t play a top 100 team in the KenPom.com rankings until Nov. 28 against Wake Forest. That should give Underwood plenty of time to get his offensive system in place.
Last year, Oklahoma State had the best offensive in the country, according to KenPom.com
That was on display Sunday with 102 points — the most in an Illini season opener since 1990. Mark Alstork and Aaron Jordan both had 17 points and the Illini had five players in double figures.
Underwood said that game was the first stepping in getting the team’s swagger back, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I love the smell of an arena, the atmosphere of an arena. Just to soak that in for a minute. I have so much love for students and the support they bring. I’ll be honest. I was nervous. I was emotional, I guess, from the standpoint I’m living out my dream. When 14,000 show up tonight, it’s pretty special. All in all it was a good night.”
KenPom projects an 80-67 win over Tennessee Martin on Sunday. The Skyhawks went 22-13 last season.
Illinois opens conference play on Dec. 1 against a Northwestern team that’s expected to be one of the best groups in the Big Ten this season.
