Illinois QB Jeff George Jr. announces transfer

Illinois QB Jeff George Jr. announced on Wednesday that he will be transferring from the program.

George shared a note on Twitter to announce his decision. George thanked the Illini coaching staff but decided to play his final two years of eligibility elsewhere.

“The University of Illinois will always be a special place for me,” George wrote. “Thank you to Coach Smith and the entire staff for helping me develop over the past couple years. With that being said, after discussions with Coach Smith as well as my family, it would be in my best interest to pursue my athletic career with 2 years of eligibility left at a school that will be utilize the abilities I have to offer. I say this with an extremely heavy heard as the Illini have been and will continue to be my family.”

This past season, George was 94-for-181 passing for 1,273 yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Illinois turned to freshman Cam Thomas late in the season and has two incoming quarterbacks in MJ Rivers and potentially Coran Taylor
