As part of its future schedule changes, Illinois announced on Tuesday that is has discontinued its biannual games with Northwestern at Soldier Field.
In a release on the team’s athletic site, Illinois said while the Northwestern games at Soldier Field will end, the Illini will continue to have nonconference games there.
The next Illinois game at Soldier Field is scheduled for Sept. 15, 2018 against South Florida. The 2017 and 2019 games against Northwestern will be played in Champaign, Ill.
“We feel strongly that we should play our traditional rivalry games in Champaign, but at the same time we are committed to a strong presence in Chicago,” said Josh Whitman, Illinois’ director of athletics. “Our intent is to play a major non-conference opponent at Soldier Field once every four years. Our team and fans enjoyed the game against Washington in 2013. It is important to maintain exposure in Chicago, and this also allows our fans and student-athletes an opportunity to experience Soldier Field.”
Also, @IlliniAD had announced the 2017 & '19 games vs. Northwestern will be in Champaign, not at Soldier Field.
