While at Illinois, Mercilus, an Akron, Ohio, native, led the nation in sacks his junior year by recording 16 quarterback takedowns. He also won the Ted Hendricks award, which praises the nation’s top defensive end, and was a unanimous All-American before being selected by the Texans with the 26th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
