Illinois QB Chayce Crouch announces end of football career

Illinois quarterback Chayce Crouch announced he was ending his football career Wednesday. Crouch is the second quarterback the Illini lost in one afternoon, as Jeff George Jr. announced his transfer earlier in the day.

Crouch threw for 852 yards and also ran for 360 yards during his three years on the field with Illinois. He decided to forgo his remaining year of eligibility.

“It was truly a pleasure to suit up for the Orange and Blue for the past 4 years. Each play I was on the field, I laid it all on the line to represent the University the best I could,” Crouch wrote on Twitter. “…I don’t think there is anything left to give. I have decided to hang up the cleats and end my career as a Fighting Illini. At this point in my life, this is what is best for me and I hope you all respect my decision.”

Crouch had 443 passing yards and 1 touchdown through the air last season. Crouch and George combined to attempt 272 of Illinois 339 passing attempts (80.2 percent) in 2017.

Cam Thomas is the only quarterback returning on Lovie Smith’s roster who attempted a pass during the 2017 season. The Illini finished the 2017 season 2-10 and lost their final 10 games.
