Illinois’ 2018 recruiting class has its first 4-star recruit.
Calvin Avery, a defensive tackle from Dallas, committed to the Fighting Illinis on Friday, choosing Lovie Smith and company over TCU, Oklahoma and others.

According to 247Sports’ composite ranking, Avery is the No. 188 player and No. 18 defensive tackle in his recruiting class. He had scholarship offers from more than two dozen Division I programs, including powerhouses like USC, Texas, Florida State, Notre Dame and Nebraska. 247Sports’ prognosticators had predicted he would wind up at either Oklahoma or TCU.
Avery is the 12th player and first defensive lineman in Illinois’ 2018 class, which ranks No. 71 in the country and last in the Big Ten, per 247Sports. He is Illinois’ first 4-star commit since Gabe Megginson of the 2015 class.
