Against the spread
Sports betting terms, explained
Point spread: A point spread is the forecast of a game by oddsmakers that is intended to generate even betting on both teams. The favorite needs to win by more than the point spread to cash the bet; the underdog needs to either win or stay within the point spread.
So if Alabama, a 7-point favorite, wins by 10 against LSU, bettors who backed the Tide win. If LSU loses by less than seven points or wins, bettors who backed the Tigers cash their tickets.
Over/under: This is a forecast of the total number of points in a game. If a bettor takes the OVER in the Wisconsin-Northwestern game, in which the total is 41.5, he or she would win their bet if 42 or more total points are scored. He or she would lose it 41 or fewer are scored in the game.
