Only one team stands in Michigan’s way of being No. 1. Whether it’s in the AP Poll, Coaches Poll, or in USA Today’s 1-128 re-rank, Alabama is the last hurdle to the top spot for Michigan.
In USA Today’s new re-rank, Michigan moved up one spot to No. 2 after Ohio State lost to Penn State. That result led to the biggest changes this week as Ohio State fell five spots to No. 7 and Penn State improved 15 spots to No. 27 — still outside the Top 25, but close.
But it’s also interesting to note the small falls of both Nebraska and Wisconsin. Both teams won on Saturday but were jumped by West Virginia and Western Michigan. The Mountaineers rolled by TCU while Western Michigan beat Eastern Michigan.
It won’t look like that for long, however. Nebraska visits Wisconsin this Saturday.
Here’s how USA Today ranks the 14 Big Ten teams:
- No. 2 Michigan (up 1)
- No. 7 Ohio State (down 5)
- No. 11 Nebraska (down 2)
- No. 12 Wisconsin (down 2)
- No. 27 Penn State (up 15)
- No. 40 Northwestern (up 4)
- No. 50 Iowa (down 7)
- No. 56 Minnesota (down 2)
- No. 65 Indiana (down 5)
- No. 68 Maryland (up 8)
- No. 75 Michigan State (down 5)
- No. 104 Purdue (down 3)
- No. 106 Illinois (down 3)
- No. 107 Rutgers (up 7)
Northwestern is also on the rise after another win. But now the Wildcats have to visit a fired-up Ohio State team looking to rebound from a loss.
