Michigan is unbeaten at 7-0 and No. 2 in the country. Nebraska is also 7-0 and in the Top 10.
Though the Big Ten still has two undefeated teams, the league also has perhaps the country’s strongest 1- and 2-loss contenders when it comes to the College Football Playoff:
- No. 6 Ohio State 6-1
- No. 11 Wisconsin 5-2
Fox Sports sees it that way with the Buckeyes, ranking them first on a list of 1-loss teams with the best chance to make the CFP. If Ohio State wins out, the Buckeyes would have wins against Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Nebraska, a possibly undefeated Michigan on Nov. 26 — and then in the Big Ten championship game should they get there.
Here’s Aaron Torres:
Point being, there’s no need to sweat Buckeyes’ fans. Your road to the playoff is clear: Win out and you’re in.
Meanwhile, on College Football Live on Wednesday, David Pollack, Joey Galloway and Paul Finebaum debated the 2-loss teams in position to make a run to the CFP. Pollack and Finebaum are both big on LSU and Auburn, which is rolling after routing Arkansas 56-3. LSU plays Alabama next weekend while Auburn plays at Alabama on Nov. 26.
Galloway said while that Alabama game gives Auburn a chance to impress and make a move, the task of beating Alabama is so strong that he thinks Wisconsin actually has a better chance.
Galloway on Wisconsin:
Wisconsin’s path, if they beat Nebraska this week and Nebraska then goes on (to lose to Ohio State next week), Wisconsin gets to the Big Ten Championship Game. They would probably face either Michigan or Ohio State. If they win that game, the winner of the Big Ten is getting into the playoff. That road, minus Alabama, seems much easier for Wisconsin to get there than anybody in the SEC West.
If Wisconsin beats Nebraska this week, the Badgers would return to the Top 10 and would need only one more Nebraska loss to be the division’s representative in the CFP.
A Wisconsin appearance would be a first. This is the third season of the CFP and no 2-loss team has ever made the playoff.
But the Big Ten also has yet to miss it. Even if the league’s champion has 1 loss or 2, it’s going to be very difficult to keep the league out of the semifinals.
