Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Taylor, the Big Ten’s top 2 running backs, were both named semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award on Friday. The Doak Walker Award is handed out annually to the nation’s top tailback.
Barkley and Taylor were 2 of 11 semifinalists for the honor. Here is the full list (in alphabetical order):
- Josh Adams, Notre Dame
- Saquon Barkley, Penn State
- Royce Freeman, Oregon
- Justice Hill, Oklahoma State
- Kerryon Johnson, Auburn
- Ronald Jones, USC
- Phillip Lindsay, Colorado
- Bryce Love, Stanford
- Rashaad Penny, San Diego State
- Devin Singletary, FAU
- Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin
Barkley was considered a Heisman favorite for most of the season until his production dipped over Penn State’s last 3 games. The Nittany Lion star still has 1,423 yards from scrimmage (899 rushing, 524 receiving) this season and has accounted for 17 touchdowns (11 rushing, 3 receiving, 2 kick returning and 1 passing).
Taylor is the Big Ten’s leading rusher with 1,525 yards — a mark that ranks third in the country. The Badgers’ running back is also the only freshman on the list of 11 semifinalists for the award.
The Doak Walker Award has been given out since 1990. Texas running back D’Onta Foreman won the honor last season, and Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon was the last Big Ten player to win the award in 2014.
