Former Florida football player Aaron Hernandez, 27, was found dead in his prison cell early Wednesday morning.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction said in a statement Wednesday that Hernandez hanged himself in his cell at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass., around 3:05 a.m. The statement said Hernandez used a bed sheet attached to the window in his cell and that he had attempted to block the door.

Hernandez had been serving a life sentence since 2015 for the 2013 murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. On Friday, he was found not guilty of 2 murders that occurred in Boston in 2012.
In that case, Hernandez was charged with the murders of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu. Prosecutors claimed Hernandez killed both men in a drive-by shooting after one of them allegedly bumped into Hernandez and spilled his drink at on him at a Boston nightclub.
The prosecution used prison phone conversations with his former Florida teammate, Mike Pouncey, as evidence in the case.
After 6 days of deliberations, a jury found Hernandez not guilty of the murder charges, as well as 3 counts of assault with intent to murder, 1 count of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and 1 count of witness intimidation. He was found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Hernandez played at Florida from 2007-09. The New England Patriots selected him in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
