Purdue-Penn State basketball preview
Leading up to this semifinal matchup, Purdue had to take on Rutgers and Penn State had to defeat Ohio State.
Both Purdue and Penn State took care of business, as Purdue beat the first No. 14-seed in the Big Ten Tournament to make it to the quarterfinal round. For Penn State, the team had to defeat Northwestern in the second round and then Ohio State for the third time this season in the quarterfinal.
Purdue and Penn State met once during the regular season and Purdue won the game, 76-73 at home. This time around, it will be on a neutral court — Madison Square Garden.
The win at the time for the Boilermakers was crucial, as it snapped a three-game losing streak. In that contest, guard Carsen Edwards led all scorers with his 27 points.
Penn State forward Mike Watkins only played nine minutes in the game and he will not play in the game on Saturday due to a knee injury. The Nittany Lions may be short-handed, but that didn’t stop them against Ohio State on Friday.
The loss for Penn State against Purdue earlier this season was the team’s first of three straight losses, but the Nittany Lions have bounced back in the Big Ten Tournament. In the quarterfinal against Ohio State, Penn State’s Tony Carr delivered against the conference’s player of the year in Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop.
Both players scored 25 points in the game, but it was Carr’s dish to Josh Reaves that ended up winning the contest. In the game between Purdue and Penn State this season, the Nittany Lions out-rebounded the Boilermakers, 35-28 and shot 50 percent from both the field and from behind the arc.
Purdue, however, had nine turnovers in the contest and Penn State committed 15. The winner of this game will face the winner of No. 1-seeded Michigan State and No. 5-seeded Michigan for the final at 4:30 p.m. on March 4.
The championship will be televised on CBS.
