Michigan is No. 1 in Football Outsiders’ S&P+ rankings, an analytical system that factors in each play during a game and season rather than just the score.
The Wolverines and Alabama are No. 1 and No. 2 by a wide margin — Michigan is almost seven-points better than No. 3 Louisville — and there’s another big drop after No. 8.
But the Big Ten has four teams in the top 15, including No. 6 Ohio State, No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 15 Penn State. Nebraska held at No. 22.
Michigan has the No. 1 defense in the country, per S&P+, but among the worst special teams units at 110. Ohio State ranks in the top 15 for all three phases of the game.
Rutgers and Purdue bring up the rear for the conference at No. 113 and No. 115 out of 128 teams.
