On the other side, Arizona State finished its season with an overall record of 7-5 (6-3 in conference). The Sun Devils enter the bowl game in second place in the Pac-12 South standings. In their last game, the Sun Devils defeated Arizona, 42-30, on Nov. 25.
The Sun Bowl is one of the oldest bowl games in college football. The bowl’s first game was played in 1935 and it has become an annual game.
While the game has been played at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas since 1963, it was previously played at Jones Stadium from 1935-37 and at Kidd Field from 1938-62.
The game features a matchup between a team from the ACC and a team from the Pac-12. Even though the current format calls for a matchup between these two conferences, other conferences have played in the Sun Bowl in the past, including the Big 12, the Big East and the Big Ten.
Last year’s edition of the Sun Bowl saw Stanford and North Carolina battle in a close affair on Dec. 30, 2016. In the end, Stanford came out victorious with a 25-23 win. In that game, Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas took home the C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player Trophy. In addition North Carolina defensive tackle won the Nazair Jones Jimmy Rogers, Jr. Most Valuable Lineman Trophy and Stanford kicker Conrad Ukropina was awarded the John Folmer Most Valuable Special Teams Player Trophy.
Despite the long list of teams that have played in the Sun Bowl over the years, 2017 marks the first time that NC State is playing in the bowl game. For Arizona State, this will mark their sixth time playing in the Sun Bowl, where they have gone 3-1-1.
Last season, NC State played in the Independence Bowl where it defeated Vanderbilt 41-17, while Arizona State lost in a 43-42 shootout against West Virginia in the Cactus Bowl.
NC State will look to quarterback Ryan Finley to have a big game, as he completed 64 percent of his passes this season for 3,200 yards and 16 touchdowns against 6 interceptions.
The Wolfpack offense will also rely heavily on running back Nyheim Hines, who rushed for 1,040 yards and 9 touchdowns on 181 carries. In addition, NC State has four receivers with over 450 yards on the season — Kelvin Harmon (993), Jakobi Meyers (651), Jaylen Samuels (551) and Stephen Louis (468).
Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins has also had a good season, as he has thrown for 2,918 yards, 17 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions while completing 63.5 percent of his passes. The Sun Devils will look to running backs Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage to have big games, as well. Richard rushed for 977 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and Ballage rushed for 657 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Lastly, Arizona State will look to their No. 1 option at receiver, N’Keal Harry, to put together a great performance. On the season, he made 73 catches for 1,000 yards and 7 touchdowns.
