The initial College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday evening and they carried a clear message: the Big Ten could factor heavily into the Playoff picture. The media reacted accordingly.
The first round of reactions arrived when Penn State came in at No. 12. Given where the Nittany Lions were early in the season, it’s pretty clear how much the committee values both the Big Ten and big wins. There was still some head scratching, though.
Pretty wild to see Penn State at No. 12 after opening 2-2 with losses at Pitt and at Michigan. OT win vs. Minnesota sparked turnaround.

Penn State at 12 suggests this committee roster likes a really good win.

As the rest of the rankings came in and four more teams in the conference placed in the top 10, the narrative was set.

I think it's safe to say the Big Ten's reputation is fully back. Conference will have 5 of top 12 teams. That's pretty damn impressive.

There will be five Big Ten teams in the top 12 of the committee rankings. Let that sink in for a minute.
