The John Mackey Award goes to the nation’s best tight end. The Big Ten hasn’t had a winner since 2006 (Matt Spaeth of Minnesota), but is that about to change?
The Mackey Award mentioned four Big Ten players in its midseason watch list, including Michigan star TE Jake Butt.
Here are the four Big Ten players:
- Jake Butt, Michigan: 23 catches for 270 yards, 3 TDs
- Mike Gesicki, Penn State: 23 catches for 277 yards, 2 TD
- George Kittle, Iowa: 15 catches for 249 yards, 2 TD
- Josiah Price, Michigan State: 14 catches for 150 yards, 2 TD

Hunter Henry of Arkansas won the award on 2015. Besides Spaeth, other Big Ten winners have been Iowa’s Dallas Clark (2002) and Purdue’s Tim Stratton (2000).
