With just one game remaining in the 2017 season and the calendar already flipped to 2018, it’s fun to try to figure out what the preseason top 25 will look like in college football next season.
Athlon Sports put together a “way-too-early” top 25 this week, and it indicates 2018 could be a strong year for the Big Ten. The conference had five teams among the top 11 in the rankings, and the Big Ten was unsurprisingly led by Ohio State at No. 3. The Buckeyes were behind just Alabama and Clemson.
Michigan was the second-highest Big Ten team on the list at No. 7, and the outlet said “the Wolverines are poised for a rebound back into the top 10 in 2018.” Wisconsin was the only Big Ten West team in the top 25, checking in at No. 8.
Michigan State, which had a huge bounce back year in 2017, found itself in the top 10 at No. 10. Penn State, despite losing Saquon Barkley, was listed right behind the Spartans at No. 11.
The Big Ten had no other teams in the top 25, but Purdue — which went 7-6 in Jeff Brohm’s first season — was among the other teams to watch. Here’s the full Athlon Sports top 15, which has five Big Ten teams, three SEC teams, three Pac-12 teams and two ACC teams.
